What is a diesel generator set?

A diesel generator set is a small power generation device powered by an internal combustion engine. When there is a shortage of electricity, the diesel generator set becomes particularly important. As a self-contained power station AC emergency power supply equipment, diesel generator sets have been increasingly widely used in various fields.

(一）Classification of diesel generator sets

There are many types of diesel generator sets, mainly in the following eight classification methods:

1. According to the fuel classification of the engine: it can be divided into diesel generator sets and composite fuel generator sets.

2. According to the speed classification: it can be divided into high-speed, medium-speed and low-speed diesel generator sets.

3. According to the use conditions classification: it can be divided into land-based, marine, trailer-type and automobile-type diesel generator sets. Among them, land-based generator sets: including mobile and fixed types. Land-based units can be divided into four types: ordinary type, automatic type, low-noise type and low-noise automatic type.

4. According to the output voltage and frequency of the generator: it can be divided into AC generator sets and DC generator sets.

6. According to the purpose classification: common units, standby units, emergency units.

7. According to the control and operation methods, it can be divided into field-operated generator sets, compartment-operated generator sets and automated generator sets.

8. According to the automation function, it can be divided into basic diesel generator sets, automatic start diesel generator sets and microcomputer automatic control diesel generator sets.

（二）Purpose of diesel generator sets

Diesel generators are small-scale power generation equipment, which refers to power machinery that uses diesel as fuel and diesel engines as prime movers to drive generators to generate electricity. Although the power of diesel generator sets is relatively low, they are widely used in mines, railways, field sites, road traffic maintenance, factories, enterprises, hospitals and other departments as backup power or temporary power because of their small size, flexibility, lightness, complete supporting facilities and easy operation and maintenance. Since diesel generator sets can be used in three situations, namely, common use, standby and emergency, the requirements for diesel generator sets for different purposes are different.

（三）Composition of diesel generator sets

Diesel generator sets are composed of base, diesel engine, base oil tank, generator set (i.e. electric bulb), controller (which plays a control role and also plays a role in protecting the unit), radiator (air cooling: fan; water cooling: water tank), silent box and other components.
